I pride myself on my broad tastes in wine ... I like wine from everywhere, and don't believe I have a specific bias towards one region or another. However, each year, that claim is shaken a little as I emerge from what is one of the best wine tasting events held in San Francisco, The Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri tasting ... For those unfamiliar with the Gambero Rosso, it is essentially an organization focused on the promotion and evaluation of Italian food and wine. Each year the organization
Of the Langa region's three great Nebbiolo-based red wines, Roero is probably the least known, in part because it has begun to aim for quality more recently than either Barolo or Barbaresco ... Like its cousins, Barolo and Barbaresco, it is a big, powerful, tannic red, but there are differences. Because of the sandier nature of Roero's terrains, the Nebbiolo grown there tends to yield wines with richer, more delicate bouquets, but less power than those from Barolo or Barbaresco. Of course,
Thankfully there's more to Italian white than pinot grigio, says Victoria Moore ... "I thought I hated Italian white wine," said my friend. "Then I realised it's not all pinot grigio." Fortunately it is not all trebbiano, either, though sometimes, as it vies for the title of Italy's most widely planted white grape, it feels like it. Trebbiano is even more innocuous than pinot grigio, and I don't mean that in a good way ... This realisation that Italy has other whites may not quite be up there
From the Canale area of Piedmont and made from 100% Barbera, this delicious red wine with deep ruby colors and juicy fragrances is aptly described below in the vintner notes, " ... along with the fresh bouquet of black and red fruit with undertones of violet, herbs and tar. It is very fragrant and full-bodied on the palate. " ... I couldn't agree more. The only thing I can add to this is the wonderfully long, silky finish. Can't pass this one up! ... Vintner notes: ... The Gallino family has
When it comes to hard facts, the Italian wine industry is hard to pin down. But you can't argue with its new whites, says Tim Atkin ... Providing reliable statistics is not an Italian speciality. You've got more chance of sharing a glass of Prosecco with the Pope than of securing up-to-date information about what's planted in the country's vineyards. A local politician down south once told me that the reason there is so little data available is that a significant number of them only exist on
From Canale, Piedmont, Italy, and produced with 100 % Nebbiolo grapes, this Roero Superiore is a dense garnet color with warm outer edges. On the nose are scents of violet and roses, but at a very subtle level, in other words, not a punch in the nose and, a core of summer fruit, cocoa, an almost undiscernible suggestion of spice with complex undertones of leather. Absolutely balanced tannins, and a long finish ...

A year ago I wrote: How many Italian varieties have you tasted? At that time I was able to list 85 without too much trouble. Your comments, dear readers, added several more. I added a few myself even without your valued input:Rossese Sylvaner Muller-Thurgau Pinot grigioTeroldegoFrappatoWhich brought the total to 91. (Deletion of "Roero," a sloppy error pointed out by David Rodriguez, brought it to 90.)Here were your adds (the ones which I had actually ...
Piedmont Bargains ... Every day I log onto xe.com and gnash my teeth, bite my nails and cry stained Barolo tears over the state of the falling pound. It's happening though. The credit crunch is real, affecting my wine drinking habits, so I presume affecting yours too. While the young Barolo I already own becomes more and more tempting it is high time to start looking around at which other Piedmont producers can offer us some real bargains both within Barolo and into Dolcetto, Barbera, Roero,
