Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2004 ... Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc is the finest wine from the Scavino vineyards seemingly year on year, but the 2004 vintage is a masterclass in balance. It appears as though the true potential of Bric del Fiasc has now been realised, a project of over 30 years, and I'm looking forward to seeing if the Scavinos can raise the Barolo bar once more - vintage permitting ... Paolo Scavino has long been a favourite producer for Piedmont fans in the know,
From Bricco di Neive in Piemonte, this Barbera is sourced from a single vineyard. Many of the best regional producers like Gaja and Bruno Giacosa often source from this very same hillside ... It's medium-body belies it's fleshy and sexy textures. Aromas of red cherries and plums paired with multi-layered flavors of dried herbs, chocolate. But what does oaky mean, anyway? Oak is one small word that encompasses a thousand different ways in which wood is used to change the taste of a wine. We often talk in terms of American (which typically imparts a vanilla-like flavour), French and Slavonian (commonly used in chianti) oak, but trees

Gaja Barbaresco 2004 ... Though Gaja Barbaresco 2004 is now a couple of vintages old it didn't really give me the excuse I needed to drink it. So I'm going to blame it on the credit crunch. This may be a £100 bottle of vino but I already own it, so in real terms, that makes it free right? And free wine is the most delicious wine of all. OK, so it didn't have 10+ years of age on it and was no where near its drinking window, but it was still incredible wine and if the Italians refuse to wait
Annamaria ... Annamaria ... is the top bottling of Lombardy power-producer Ca ... Faced with last nights choice of sparkler I had to make a toughie between Ca ... Annamaria ... and the ... Extra Brut. I opted for this wine for two reasons. Firstly, I've drunk so much this year it's borderline obscene and secondly, because the Ca ... comes from Lombardy, a region I have continually neglected since the beginning of the blog ... is a huge outfit and the most famous wine maker internationally
